Riot Games' announcement about allowing sponsorships from betting houses in the professional leagues of League of Legends and VALORANT as of 2025 has raised both interest and controversy. The decision is not accidental. The esports organizations face a complicated economic situation: the maintenance of players, coaches and technical staff entails very high expenses, while revenues, in many cases, are not sufficient to sustain long-term operations.

Whalen Rozelle, Head of Global Esports at Riotexplained that the introduction of betting sponsorships will give teams access to additional sources of incomeessential to guarantee the economic viability of the competitive ecosystem.

To avoid excessive exposure of gambling related content, Riot has established certain limits:

  1. Prohibited in official competitions. Neither the major leagues such as the LEC or the VCT show logos or mentions of bookmakers.

  2. Internal team sponsorships. Tier 1 clubs may sign agreements, but without displaying sponsorships on the t-shirts nor during the official broadcasts.

  3. Promotion in social networks. Organizations will be able to promote these brands on their own communication channels, outside of Riot's broadcasts.

The advent of betting on esports can be seen as a sign of maturity.
